Vet Dentristry update: Only 10% of pet owners care for their pet's teeth.

American Veterinary Medical Association names Feb as Pet Dental Health Month.

Summary:

  • 80% of dogs, 70% of cats show signs of oral disease by age 3
  • Pets can get periodontal (gum) disease just like humans
  • Doggy breath, change in eating habits, pawing at face/mouth, red swollen gums, yellow-brown crust of tartar, pain or bleeding when gums are touched, may be signs
  • Start with trip to vet
  • Start with rubbing pet's teeth with fingers. Gradually increase the time spent, then start using a toothbrush.
  • Do not use regular human toothpaste
